Medicare was created in 1965 so that, those over 65 could get health insurance coverage they needed. Originally limited the only Part A and Part B, Medicare has changed and evolved to provide additional coverage. Today, Medicare provides access to healthcare for Americans who are 65 and older, improving the health and healthcare access for older Americans.
Original Medicare includes both Part A, hospital insurance, and Part B, medical insurance. While Part A and Part B provide coverage for the majority of your expenses, the Medicare program has evolved over time and now includes Part C, Medicare Advantage Plan’s, and Part D, Prescription Drug Coverage, as well as Medicare Supplements, known as Medigap Plans.
Medicare Plans
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) is responsible for inpatient hospitalizations, as well as skilled nursing facility care, hospice or palliative care, and some types of home health care. Part A is free for most, but it does have cost sharing for services.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) is responsible for outpatient services, physician’s services, preventative care, and medical supplies. Part B requires a monthly premium payment, adjusted based on an individual’s income, Medicare Part B does have cost sharing for services. After satisfying a deductible, coverage is generally 80 percent.
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan)
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan) delivers individual health plans via private insurance companies under contract with Medicare. Medicare Advantage provides Part A and Part B coverage, and in most cases prescription drugs. These plans also provide benefits beyond the scope of Original Medicare, including dental coverage, vision coverage and much more.
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) can be added as standalone coverage to Original Medicare (A and B), or can be obtained as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan. In some cases, failure to enroll in a Part D plan when you are first eligible can result in permanent penalties.
Medicare Supplements
Medicare Supplements (also called Medigap Plans) work as supplements to Medicare, covering healthcare costs not otherwise covered by Original Medicare such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. These products are available through private insurers and can help reduce potetial out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare.
